The Queer Principles of Kit Webb (2021) Cat Sebastian (London Highwaymen #1)
Set in England in 1751
“I’ve already told you what I think. Paying the blackmailer is letting your father get away with it. I want to make him suffer,” Marian added with a degree of relish Percy found entirely understandable.
This was so far from a comprehensive list of his father’s worst misdeeds that it was almost incorrect, the understatement so severe as to verge on dishonesty.
“In any event,” Percy went on, “what I had thought were principles were merely manners, and they’re utterly insufficient for my present circumstances.”
He still wasn’t used to accounting for all the ways his abilities had changed since his injury, and was cross with himself for his lack of forethought.
Every day is market day for secrets, his mother had always said. Secrets could be traded for favors, for countenance, for trust. Secrets could be kept for the same price.
