Mischief Night, or Gate Night as some folks called it, was an annual tradition throughout the woodlands.

She jumped in surprise but then realized it was only a spider dangling from a silken thread. The spider must have come inside during the day, looking for a warmer place to set up shop. “Oh, excuse me, I didn’t see you there,” Vera said to the spider.

Vera’s mother had been very firm about manners. Always greet a spider when you see one, she had said. We may not speak the same language, but courtesy is understood by all.
