A Woman of WWII Mystery

Poppy Redfern and the Midnight Murders (2019)

Poppy Redfern and the Midnight MurdersSet in England 1942

Poppy Redfern trained to become ARP (Air Raid Precautions) Warden for the the village of Little Buffenden. She likes being able to help out and do her part for the war–especially now the Americans have entered the war and the end might finally be in sight.

But the population isn't sure how they feel about the US Army Air Force base–especially when a young woman turns up dead.

Normally, I read either non-fiction, or rereads, before bed. I have to avoid stories that might keep me away trying to figure out what happened next.

So having this as my bedtime read actually says something about the story. It wasn't a bad story, it just didn't pull me into the story until the final quarter of the book. Which isn't an particularly good marker for a mystery.

That's not to say it wasn't interesting–there were lots of bits I found fascinating. But I don't think I'd go out of my way to read the next book in the series.
