An Excellent Mystery (1985) Ellis Peters
The war between Stephen and Maud continues, leading to the burning of much of Winchester. This causes two monks to appear at the abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, seeking refuge and shelter at their brother abbey.
But one of the brothers had been a Crusader or some renown in real life, who took orders after a terrible wound.
“In that last battle with Zenghi and the men of Mosul. He had Syrian doctors after the battle.”
That might very well be why he survived so terrible a maiming, thought Cadfael, who had learned much of his own craft from both Saracen and Syrian physicians.
The other brother is a mute, and a loyal companion and care-taker of Brother Humilis.
This is a good story, but not one of my favorites, even though I very much like Brother Humilis
