Throne of Jade (2006) Naomi Novik (Temeraire)
Set in an alternate timeline, 1805
After the Chinese discovered that their treasured dragon egg ended up with an English naval captain, they started insisting Temeraire be returned to China. However, Temeraire will not be separated from Lawrence.
First, a major chunk of this book is the journey from England to China, giving this book another parallel to Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey & Maturin series.
young Roland and the other two cadet runners, Morgan and Dyer, had been set to playing there by the ensigns, who had conveyed their duty to defend the rights of the Corps. Being so small, they could walk the ship’s rail with ease and were dashing back and forth with a fine show of recklessness.
Second, this is a romance series.
“You would rather go home, though, would you not?”
“I would be lying if I said otherwise,” Laurence said heavily. “But I would rather see you happy; and I cannot think how I could make you so in England,”
You cannot convince me otherwise.
“Last week, Qian admired my breastplate, and I told her you had given it to me; then I thought I would like to give you a present also. She said it was usual for the sire and dame to give a gift when a dragon takes a companion, so I might choose one for you from her things, and I thought this was the nicest.”
Romance.
