Shadow Rites (2016) Faith Hunter narrated by Khristine Hvam (Jane Yellowrock)

Shadow RitesNow we’ve reached the place where the story starts to pick up steam and we only get partial resolutions at the end of each book, as things in New Orleans get worse and worse.

The Witch Conclave is scheduled for New Orleans, and Leo hopes to make a treaty with the witches, both in compensation for past harms, and to keep the supernatural world from war, when the European vampires come.

As always, I’m bugged by Angie–she is both too old and too young for her age, in her dialog, which is frustrating in books where she plays a large part.

But to offset that, Jane and Alex and Eli are now officially claiming each other as family, which is one of my favorite things.

“Uncle Eli,” Molly said from the living room, censure and glee in her tone.

“Sorry,” he said. “Best I could do on short notice. I’ll do better next time.”

“I suggest there be no next time.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said. “That would clearly be the best decision on my part.”

And Beast plays a large part in this book, and I adore Beast.

I rested and slept and ate raw roast and steak all day. Eli was best litter mate.

Smell of Edmund was strong in yard. Vampire had fed each of them. Vampire had given much blood. Vampire is good hunter and good mother to kits.

Inside us, Jane laughed. I’ll be sure to tell him that.

Jumped into Edmund car. Car chairs were made of cow skin. Would hunt for more cow with Edmund and Eli, but would eat cow skin, not make chairs. Turned around one time. Lay down. Closed eyes.

Dreamed of hunting in car, chasing cows, many, many cows.

This is a gag that brings me joy every single time it comes up.
