Death at the Deep Dive (2022) Josh Lanyon (Secrets and Scrabble)
This is book seven of the Secrets and Scrabble series. However, book six has not yet been published “due to circumstances outside our control”. Luckily, at this point in the series the switch isn’t a problem, since they are written as stand alones (mostly).
Once again, Ellery is embroiled in a mystery.
He reached the front entrance and moved to slide the lock. At the same moment the brass bell chimed as someone started to open the door.
Ellery exclaimed in alarm and slammed shut the door.
On the other side of the divided glass panes, an exasperated Jack called, “You called me, remember?”
Unfortunately for Ellery, his employees (and friends) insist he become involved in the mystery.
Ellery felt obliged to say, “She’s not going to reveal her darkest secrets to a complete stranger either.”
“You’ve never been to one of those places, have you, dearie? I assure you, Josephine will be delighted to spill the tea to a handsome, personable young man. Especially a handsome, personable young man working on a book about the island’s unsolved mysteries.”
Ellery said slowly, “I’d be lying if I pretended it doesn’t concern me how easily you come up with these fabrications.”
Additionally, he is (out of the blue) offered an acting gig. Despite the fact he is done with acting.
“I don’t know what it means either,” Ellery admitted. He wiped his wrist against his eyes.
Jack groaned, pulled him close, kissed his wet eyelids, the side of his nose, the corner of his mouth. “Ell, don’t. I’m sorry. If this is what you want, I’m glad for you. And more money… that house eats money like Cookie Monster gobbles sugar cookies. More money is always going to come in handy.”
“I don’t know if it’s what I want,” Ellery said. “I turned the part down at first, but then Ronny started quoting numbers, and it’s a lot of dough.”
I am enjoying this series, and although it’s weird this book is out before the one that was supposed to come before it, it shouldn’t matter too much because, as previously mentioned, the books are written mostly as stand-alones.
