She pushed herself up with her elbows before anyone could stop her. The quick movement was a mistake. She knew it would be. Really, anyone would think this was the first time she had been knocked unconscious.

“I said stop that! You will not be pulling at your gown tonight. It is most indecent.”

“Couldn’t we just—”

“No.”

“What if I—”

“No.”

“May I at least—”

“No!”

“I was only going to ask for my cloak.”

“Oh.”

“Is something wrong?” she inquired softly.

“Hmm? Wrong?” he responded, only half hearing her.

“Yes, wrong. You’re looking at me most peculiarly.”

“Sorry, was I?”

“Yes, you are.”

“How peculiar.”

“So I believe I said. Peculiar. Are you unwell?”

He snapped back with alarming speed. Unwell? Good Lord, is that what he looked like when consumed with desire? Unwell?

Mr. Jarles climbed off the bed in the nonchalant manner of a man who had never been held accountable for his sins and had no intention of being subjected to that practice now.
