Shores of Desire (1997) Tracy Grant (Lescaut Quartet)

Shores of DesireSet in Scotland, Belgium, and France in 1815

“I’m sorry.” Melton’s eyes warmed with sympathy. “I wish there was more I could say. But if there are words that ease such a grief, I have yet to discover them.”

“Don’t worry, Em. Leave it to the men.”

The door closed behind him. Emma looked at Arabel. “I can’t imagine any words that would make me feel less confident.”

“(W)hile I’m not a paragon of virtue, that’s one place I draw the line.” “Seducing governesses?” “Seducing any woman whose livelihood is dependent upon her respectability.”

The cannonballs that should have ricocheted over the crest of the ridge and reached the men sheltering behind it were engulfed by the mud.

Why couldn’t anger be a solid wall barricading one against the treacherous assaults of memory? Instead it was a fragile curtain, with great rents that let in the thoughts and impulses of the past.
