Undeading Bells (2019) Drew Hayes (Fred, the Vampire Accountant)

Undeading Bells

“Geez, Freddy, all those old movies you love, maybe work some classic action flicks in there occasionally. I’m more or less a parahuman secret agent and long-time loner on the verge of settling down with someone I really love, which means it feels like fate is just waiting for the chance to snatch it away.

You’ve got a whole day to be anxious, so don’t use it all up tonight. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

“Hello there, Claudius, pleasure to meet you.”

“Yes, yes, era-appropriate greetings to you, too.”

The anxious, worried nature I was born with would go wild if every test I had to take was more challenging than the last. I’d certainly get in my own head, imagining more and more dangerous tasks still to come. Handling the hardest task first, on the other hand, would let me know that I could take on whatever came next.

It would be disingenuous to say Lillian was the pessimistic sort. A truer assessment would be to say that life had gone out of its way to prove what a bastard it could be to her, and she’d merely taken the message.
