A Murderous Relation, Audio Edition (2020) Deanna Raybourn narrated by Angele Masters (Veronica Speedwell)
I apparently enjoyed this more listening than I did originally reading.
his argument is as specious as Lamarck’s Theory of Inheritance.
It seemed wildly unfair that he had proverbial first crack at searching her things when the whole idea had been mine to begin with. And all because he was the one who knew how to break into things, I reflected bitterly, making a mental note to apply myself to learning the illicit arts of lockpickery.
“I would be very happy to go as the Queen of the Iceni,” I said.
“She likes it because it means she can carry weapons,” Stoker informed him. …
“Tiberius, no one has ever looked less like a Briton queen. To begin with, I have no spear or short sword. I have no blue woad for my face. My tunic should be ankle length for this climate, and I will not even begin to discuss the impracticality of leaving one’s hair loose for battle.”
In spite of his work with dead creatures—or perhaps because of it—Stoker was always keen to find dignity in death.
