The Affair of the Mysterious Letter, Audio Book (2019) Alexis Hall narrated by Nicholas Boulton

The Affair of the Mysterious LetterI read this in 2020, and enjoyed it then, so when floundering for my next audiobook (I couldn’t think of a series I wanted to dive into), I went with this.

First, the narrator has a marvelous voice, and did a lovely job with the story.

Second, the story is a mashup of Sherlock Holmes and Cthulhu, and although I hate horror, the silliness was such that the horror was hardly noticeable at all.

“Yes. The advertisement mentioned that fact.” That is, it had mentioned the lack of laundry service. The possibility of agonising death, although present for one reason or another in a number of rented properties in Khelathra-Ven, was habitually elided from public notices.

Ms. Haas moved her mouth close my ear. “I cannot believe I engaged in connubial activities with this gentleman. But I suppose I was very young.”

As a matter of record, I should add that the words “engaged,” “connubial,” “activities,” and “gentleman” were not, in actuality, used by Ms. Haas at this juncture, but I have taken some licence in representing her use of language in order to protect the sensibilities of my readers.

But mostly, I adore Captain Wyndham.

“I have no doubt you think me very foolish. But I shall always offer aid to those who may need it, and on this principle, I shall not compromise.”

Ms. Haas put one hand to her face and the other upon my shoulder. “You are going to get so utterly killed.”
