Heartsville

Bookmarked (2015)

BookmarkedMark Werner’s dream was to run a book store, and he’ll do anything to keep it open–including reaching out to the man who writes his favorite series, but was incredibly rude to him a year earlier.

After all, what’s the worst that can happen?

This story tried really hard. I mean, it had a SFF author. It had a book store owner. Those are good things.

The problem is that it all just fell completely flat for me.

It wasn’t bad, it just was, well, kind of boring.

Hat Trick

Goalie Interference (2019) Avon Gale & Piper Vaughn

Goalie InterferenceThis book kept coming up on review sites and podcasts as one that people loved.

Ryu Mori is ready to be the starting goalie for the Atlanta Venom, but the team has traded someone and now Ryu is supposed to play in tandem with Emmitt Armstrong, and it all feels incredible unfair that this brash, arrogant, obnoxious guy might take the place Guy has worked so hard to earn.

But in addition to annoyance, Ryu also feels an attraction towards Emmitt, and neither of them know what to do with their attraction.

I hesitated on getting this one, because sports romances just don’t seem that appearing to me. But I’ve been adoring Check Please so much, that when this went on sale I decided to try it.

It’s not that it’s bad. Because it isn’t.

It’s not that it didn’t have light and funny spots.

He didn’t play hockey.” Emmitt fiddled with his car keys. “He was a dental student.”

“A dentist? Bro.” Morley guffawed. “I don’t know why that’s funny.”

“Because maybe he was dating me for access to a guaranteed client base?”

Because it did have lots of funny bits.

It just really wasn’t my jam is all.

I wanted to know what happened to the two of them, but didn’t care that much about the hockey and found all the angst about who was starting also to be really not my thing.
